AUSTRALIAN light-welterweight champion Jack ‘Assassin’ Asis returns to the ring in Toowoomba on Friday, June 7, for a stoush with Jose Saez, of Argentina.
The Filipino is expecting a rough night with Saez, who boasts an impressive 22 wins, 12 by KO, and is coming off a close points loss for the North American Boxing Association (NABA) title in Canada three weeks ago.
Asis boasts a winning streak of seven bouts, including knockouts over Australian champions, former world title challengers and, most recently, from a stunning display of boxing en route to a unanimous decision over tough Indonesia’s Revo Rengkung.
Asis’ trainer and manager Brendon Smith said that Saez presented a new challenge for the Filipino, one which would be his biggest career test to-date.
“But I am extremely happy with this match up,” Smith said.“Everything is starting to come together for Jack. He has great support now which will be out in force on June 7, when Toowoomba can expect to see a sea of ‘Assassin Asis’ red headbands in the Rumours International crowd.
”This growing support has been reflected in his last performances”.
“I feel with another good performance in this fight it could be (a bigger) title time for Jack; however, we are certainly not looking past Jose Saez.”
”This will definitely be Jack’s biggest test to-date and he will need to be on his game to win the fight”.
The match will be an undercard of “Smithy Brings the big Fights 4” which headlines current World Boxing Federation (WBF) world middleweight champion and (World Boxing Organisation (WBO) world No 8, Les “Lock N Load” Sherrington, who takes on Paraguay’s champion Jorge Gomez Perez.
The undercard will also feature local stars Will Young, Kris George, Josh Webb and English import and now adopted local Darren Askew.
