SOUTH Sydney Rabbitohs winger Andrew Everingham scored the first try of the National Rugby League (NRL) match against the New Zealand Warriors in Perth, Western Australia, to lead the Sydneysiders to a 30-13 win on Friday, July 5.
Everingham (Evro) picked up a volley-kick from halfback Adam Reynolds and bolted to the tryline for the touchdown. Reynolds’ successful conversion kick opened the score to 6-0 after only six minutes of play.
The Rabbitohs continued their march to a first minor premiership in 24 years with the 17-point victory.
A smh.com.au website report said: ”Whatever Mark McGuire said to his players at half time worked as the Rabbitohs scored 24 unanswered points in the second half to clinch an impressive comeback. The Warriors’ five-game winning streak had come to an end.”
The Rabbitohs have the bye next week and play the Dragons on the July 22.
Scores: RABBITOHS – Everingham (6min), Sutton (48min), Goodwin (67min, 75min), McQueen (80min) tries. Reynolds 5 goals from five attempts. WARRIORS – Mannering (27min), Hurrell (35min) tries. Johnson 2 goals from two attempts.
Meantime, pinoz Everingham confirmed recently that he may switch to rugby at the end of this season. Fairfax Media said it understood that Japan was an option.
”It’s a possibility, I want to stay here,” Everingham said. ”I’ll let my manager sort the rest out. There’s some interest but I really want to stay here.”
Another former Rabbitoh and pinoz, hooker Craig Wing had switched to rugby two years ago and is now playing in Japan.
Born in Newcastle NSW Everingham played his junior football for the Beresfield Bears before being signed by the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.
He played for the Sea Eagles’ NSW Cup reserve-grade team in 2006 before moving on to the Western Suburbs Magpies, also in the NSW Cup.
In 2010, Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens asked Everingham to come and train with the first-grade team two days a week. However, he could not break in to the NRL.
In 2011, Everingham signed a one-year contract with the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Coach Michael Maguire had been impressed by a highlights package of Everingham that was sent to a number of clubs.
In round 3 of the 2012 NRL season, Everingham made his NRL debut for the Rabbitohs against Penrith Panthers. He scored a try on debut, in just the second minute of the game with his first touch of the ball.
He then scored at least one try in his next four games including two tries in three of those games, giving him one of the most successful starts to a career in terms of try-scoring of all time.
On May 4 2012, Everingham re-signed with the Rabbitohs for one year.
