US-BASED Filipino-Australian golf champion Jason Day has returned to represent Australia with close friend Adam Scott for the World Cup of Golf on November 21-24, at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club.
Day said on television yesterday that he was playing with the burden of being told that his grandmother and seven other relatives had died in a super-typhoon that all but wiped away the Philippines’ southern city of Tacloban and neighbouring towns a week ago.
The World Cup will field some of the world’s best golfers including Americans Matt Kuchar and Kevin Streelman, The Philippines’ Angelo Que and Tony Lascuna, Japan’s Ryo Ishikawa and Hideto Tanihara, South Korea’s Sang-Moon Bae and K.J. Choi. Spain’s Miguel A Jimenez and Rafael Cabrera Bello, and Argentina’s Angel Cabrera and Emiliano Grillo.
Day, of the south-east Queensland town of Beaudesert, requested privacy for his family: “I will have no further public comments at this time. Please pray for all who have suffered loss.”
The World of Golf Cup field represents 34 countries, 74 PGA Tour victories, 31 European Tour champions, 11 players who have played in the Presidents Cup, and seven players with Ryder Cup experience.
