RUGBY league’s Asia Cup champions PAL Tamaraws showed no mercy in a shut-out of South Americam side Latin Heat, 114-0, at Bycroft Oval, Runaway Bay, in Newcastle NSW recently.
A costly Latin Heat error on the last tackle after only two minutes of play opened the gates for Tamaraws’ Denis Gordon to scoop, scoot away and notch the first points on the board with a try.
The Filipinos scored a second try and conversion shortly after with a display of superior teamwork, and it was just a block-busting romp to the final bell from there. Tamaraws used their greater rugby league nous to come up with the try, completing a one-on-one strip before scurrying away to establish an early 12-0 lead.
Latin Heat didn’t stop trying, however, but rarely held the ball for the opening quarter, falling behind, 34-0, before the first break.
Only four players from the South Amiercan side were registered rugby league players in 2013. It was also the team’s first international appearance. By comparison, The Filipinos had a majority of registered rugby league players and had play in tournaments in Australian and Thailand.
