ASIA Pacific light-welterweight champion Ranee Ganoy couldn’t believe he’d scared off another opponent again when Ghana’s David Kotey failed to show up for scheduled 10-round non-title main event at Club Punchbowl on Friday, May 30, 2014.
The Filipino, now an Australian citizen and living in Campbelltown NSW, was left “waiting at the altar” after the Ghanian reportedly jumped ship and disappeared after landing at Sydney Airport in the morning.
According to fight promoter Robert Wilesmith, his imports Kotey and three other fighters had breached their contracts and were now seeking asylum in Australia.
“I’ve lost at least $15,000 in the process,” Wilesmith said. “Costs of the fighters’ passports, visas and airfares have come to nothing.
“In the meantime, Ranee has run out of another opponent.”
Gaqnoy has been idle for a year now because local boxers have shunned him. Promoters have had to turn to importing fighters from Thailand, Indonesia and African countries just to keep him from giving up boxing altogether.
“I think my best chance to continue fight now is to campaign in the United States,” Ranee said. “I hope I can find someone the proper connections in Las Vegas or New York.”
