TEAM Australia, chock-full of pinoz, won the silver medal with the adult squad of ZBoyz at the 13th World Hip Hop Dance championships in Las Vegas USA on Sunday, August 10, 2014.
Team captain Miko Selorio, of Sydney, said it was Australia’s first medal in 13 years of the championships, which has been reocognised as hip hop’s ‘’Olympic Games’’ took place this year at The Orleans arena.
Selorio’s Team Australia comprised 11 separate squads which took part in four separate divisions.
The ZBoyz hail from Brisbane, Queensland. The six-man crew was led by choreographer Matthew Gavet. It was competing at the world championships for the very first time.
“They were up against 77 teams from 46 countries, and they finished second overall in the world,” Selorio said. “A remarkable achievement.
“The silver medal has set a new benchmark and will inspire many Australian hip hop dancers to follow their dreams. It was only a matter of time before our Australian dancers get recognized.
“Hard work, dedication and commitment will drive Australia to aim for gold next year. This is only the beginning, but after last weekend’s results, anything is possible.”
Selorio is also Lidcombe-based HHI Australian country director and MAS founder.
There was another team from Perth named The Society, most members of which were pinoz under choreographer Una Genuinio.
The Society made the semi-finals, but fell short of making the finals in the Mega Crew division.
Another pinoz was Michael Flores with NSW team The Pack. The team made the semi-finals in the Adult division, same division as ZBOYZ. He was the lone pinoz in that group of seven boys.
