Mrs Lim, 36, joined her sons Elijah, 6, and Caleb, 9 ~ and nephew Ethan, 7 ~ at the Black Belt Matrial Arts (BBMA) intramurals at the Central Coast Grammar School.
Mum won the 35+ veteran women’s basic kata, and Elijah won the 5-6-years little dragons kata.
Caleb placed third in the basic kata event, and Ethan won the 6-7-years little dragons kata.
Mrs Lim, who started doing martial arts only nine months earlier with BBMA Hornsby Dojo, also placed second in the 35+ female basic kata event.
Ethan also placed second in the 6-7-years little dragons tag sparring.
Mrs Lim and the three boys were the only Filipino-Australians in the competition with a field 345 competitors.
She had quit her job as IT product development manager five years ago to look after her two sons, and decided to take up karate after recognising the sport’s physical and mental benefits on her sons’ development.
“Through karate, I have gained a better balance both physically and mentally in my everyday life,” Mrs Lim said.
“It has become a release from stress, a break from the routine and challenge of being a stay-at-home mum.”
“Karate makes me a better parent by being a role model to my children with the attributes of respect, self-discipline, focus, perseverance, humility, courage and an indomitable spirit.”
