QUEENSLAND’S Sports Darling Downs named IBO super-featherweight Jack Asis its Sport Star for the month of April at its quarterly breakfast presentation on Friday, July 24, 2015.
April this year was the month the Toowoomba-based Asis TKO’d previously undefeated champion Kye McKenzie in the eighth round to win the world title.
The Filipino felt the moment had come as early as the fourth round, and he went for the kill in round eight when referee Gary Dean stopped the match at 1min 28sec on Saturday, April 11, 2015.
At the trophy presentation, Asis flashed his big smile and told the crowd: “I’m sorry, I’m very shy. I don’t really like talk I like fight. But thank you everyone for supporting me I very much appreciate.”
Sports Darling Downs president Mick Smith responded: ”Jack is a great local sporting success story. Sports Darling Downs is all about supporting local athletes (and) it was great to help some one like Jack Asis.
“We’ve all read about the struggles he faced in life to achieve his goals. It’s refreshing to see someone like Jack who is very humble, shy and extremely polite. When you listen to him talk you can see how much he genuinely loves Toowoomba.”
As the April monthly winner, Asis goes into the running for the Sports Darling Downs Sports Star of the Year for 2015 award.
