WINNING on a countback in a tight hit-up for the 8th Filipino Press Golf Cup on Sunday, November 17, 2019, Manny Castillo beat Ronald Martinez to capture the championship for the second year in a row.
Castillo scored an impressive 74 points under System 36 which did away with individual handicaps to offer a much more level playing game.
His putting partner Sue Lee played all the putts for Castillo as prescribed by the team-game requirement exclusively used by the Filipino Press Golf Cup rules.
Runner-up Martinez’s putting partner was Marilie Bomediano (Eftekharhashtroudi), who won the ‘Best Putter’ trophy.
Novelty prizes went to Manny Maniago for the ‘Longest Drive’, Manny Castillo for ‘Nearest the Pin’, Sue Lee for ‘Best Dressed’, and the pair of Violi and John Calvert was awarded the ‘Encouragement’ trophy.
Josie Musa did the honours this year of presenting trophies to the winners.
The smaller than usual number of entries and a cloudy sky could not dampen the enthusiasm of this year’s field of entries: The 23C weather temperature saw to it that players managed through 18 holes comfortably.
Smooth running for this year’s tournament was credited to Ric de Vera as field marshal who organised the players, managed the scoring, and donated money towards the proceeds which would go the ‘Fighting Fund’ of the Federation of International Journalists.
Josie and Gerry Musa sponsored the barbecue lunch and donated money towards the proceeds.
De Vera, Bomediano, and Josie Musa were charged with delivering the proceeds of $260 to the Australian Journalist Association office in Redfern in a week’s time.
