FILIPINO Joe Noynay stopped Australia’s Liam Wilson in the fifth of a scheduled 10-rounder to retain the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Asian Pacific super-featherweight title in Newcastle NSW on Wednesday, July 7, 2021.
Noynay (pictured standing over Wilson) had been idle for the last 20 months but he managed to prove too good for Wilson.
He dropped the Australian four times before the referee called a halt to the match.
The Noynay-Wilson fight was an undercard of the Tim Tszyu v Steve Spark main event, won by Tszyu with a TKO in the third round.
In another undercard, Filipino-Australian Czar Amonsot lost by TKO in the first round to Sam Ah See of Australia.
Noynay, a southpaw, controlled the tempo of the fight.
Midway through the first round, Wilson switched to a southpaw stance. Not a wise move: Noynay promptly decked Wilson with a left cross to the temple to send him down for the first time.
Wilson took the fight to Noynay, catching the Filipino with rights several times.
In the third, Wilson continued his attack. But Noynay’s timing with his counter-attack nullified the Australian’s punches.
In the 4th, Noynay resumed control and dropped Wilson again with a straight left. Wilson seemed hurt but showed a lot of heart by beating the count and making a fight of it.
Moments later the Filipino dropped Wilson again. This time the Australian appeared badly hurt, but he beat the count again and referee Phil Austin allowed him to continue.
The 5th round was anti-climax: Wilson was clearly fighting only on sheer guts and instinct, with as Noynay swarming on the Australian.
Going into the end of the round, Noynay, nicknamed the ‘Jaw Breaker’ caught Wilson with a straight left to the jaw to put the Australian down for the count. *
