WITH remarkable precision and football savvy, Filipinas, the Philippine national women’s soccer football team overwhelmed Fiji, 8-0, at the Western Sydney Wanderers FC football park in Blacktown on Monday, April 11, 2022.
The event was an international friendly in preparation for Filipinas’ participation at the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam next month.
It was the second game by the teams in less than a week: the Filipinas whipped Fiji, 7-2, at the same venue on Thursday, April 7
The Filipinas arrived in Australia over a week before the match-up with Fiji, setting up camp in Sydney with their Australian head coach Alen Stajcic.
At the 31st SEA Games, Filipinas will be grouped with host and defending champion Vietnam, Indonesia, and Cambodia.
“We’ll be working hard to ensure we get back to the levels where we were during the Asian Cup,” Stajcic said.
They are expected to stay there until early May before flying out to Hanoi in time for their first game on Sunday, May 9, 2022.
As of this writing, the team is expected to play three more matches and stay in their western Sydney camp another two weeks before flying to Vietnam
Philippine Star sports reporter Luisa Morales wrote on the Filipinas’ 8-0 win: “Sofia Harrison opened the scoring this time for the Philippines when she got past Fiji’s goalkeeper in the 10th minute for her first international goal for the country.
“Then forward Quinley Quezada, who scored two goals against Fiji last week, doubled the lead by the 25th minute.
“But not before Anicka Castaneda worked to deny a chance by their opponents to equalize earlier in the game at the 23-minute mark.
“Katrina Guillou then scored two of her three goals of the day in quick succession, netting goals in the 31st and 36th minutes.
“After the half time break, goals continued to pour in for the Filipinas when Carleigh Frilles, who was celebrating her birthday, got past the keeper four minutes after the restart.”
